Fireworks on Canvas

Wednesday 5th November 2014

Remember, remember the 5th November...

That's right, we've reached Guy Fawkes Night already and who doesn't love a good firework display?! Only thing is, they're all over so quickly, a bang, burst of colour and then you're back to darkness.

So why not make the memory more lasting? With their spectacular shapes colouring against a dramatic black backdrop, Fireworks look simply amazing on camera. Here are our top tips to get the best photographs this bonfire night.

1) Pretty obvious, but get a spot. You may need to get there a bit earlier if it's a public display for a prime position. If you want to take shots without having any spectators getting in the way then scope out a position with some height advantage. It's also highly recommended to scope out the area before the display begins. Maybe there are some interesting buildings or landmarks that you can feature in the backdrop.

2) Reflections can look superb. If your display is near a river, lake or even at the beach near the sea, try to include some reflections. Whether or not the water lies still, or has waves running through, the colours displayed in the water can lead to some fantastic results, especially when contrasted with the display above.

3) Leave the flash off. Firstly, the fireworks should be bright enough and you won't even be tempted to think of your flash tool. But be warned if you do, they are too far away for it to have the desired effect and you'll likely end up only distorting a potentially great shot.

4) Get your shots in early. It's far better to be snappy happy at the beginning, you'll find the photographs will be much clearer. After a while you'll find the sky filled with that smoky haze and it can it can distort your images. I know this is a hard one though, as the end of the display is usually the most impressive part.

5) To follow on from the above you can turn this situation around. With all the smoky haze, it will make for some fantastic atmospheric shots. For example, if the display is at a castle. Wait around at the end and you could get some dramatic and eerie shots of the building looming through the smoke, almost as if post battle, cool right?
