Food on Canvas

Tuesday 23rd September 2014

Looking to jazz up the kitchen at home this autumn, or maybe add some colour and good vibes throughout your eatery? Food on canvas could well be your answer.

If you have a restaurant, cafe or even a pub, food on canvas is a great way to showcase all of your fantastic signature dishes and get your customers inspired and their mouths watering. It can also work great in the home too. Whether it's simply a dish you're super proud of, or a way to add some vibrant colour to the room, this type of print will look great in any kitchen.

Below we've featured our top 5 food photography tips to help you in getting the very best shots for your canvas.

1) Avoid flash photography: using your flash in this situation really won't do you any favours. Think about lighting before hand and keep in soft, using the natural shadows that fall into place to your advantage. Bright light will only make it garish and unflattering to the eye and you can really see the difference in the images.

2) Don't leave it sat about: just as if you were about to eat it, you want it to look appetising, salads and herbs can wilt quickly especially in conjunction with hot food. You want to capture the image in its prime.

3) Get the best angle: get everything in place with props so you're ready to go once the food is out and fresh out the kitchen. Experiment with a few various angles, once you produce the images you'll be able to tell straight away which angle looks the best. Try from above, all the way to up close and personal, some will just fit much better than others. By taken many you'll be able to broaden the scale up for that perfect shot.

4) The right equipment: you don't need the most fancy pancy camera out there to get great photos. Yes sometime it can help, but it's more about how you use it. Even an iPhone used correctly could have potential of some great shots. If you can get hold of one a trip-pod is a must. And will help to keep your shot steady and clear.

5) Props: think ahead as to any props you might need. Will you using crockery etc.? If so make sure they are at the ready, try experimenting before hand for the best looks. If you're photographing fruit or vegetables etc. have a water spritzer to hand. They'll make everything super fresh when you pick up the beads of water.
